Project: Childhood Mental Health

Client: PorchSpace Productions

PorchSpace approached me with an exciting challenge: to create a 30-second animation for their upcoming documentary on childhood mental health. With a tight deadline looming, we quickly collaborated to refine their imaginative concepts into a finished animation. The key was to blend warmth and whimsy while also conveying some pretty fuzzy feelings. I focused on using playful animations and friendly characters that would resonate with both children and adults, ensuring that the final piece would be not only engaging but also a heartfelt reflection of the important themes they wished to convey. Working closely with the PorchSpace team, we turned their vision into a dynamic and uplifting animation that sparkles with care and creativity.

With such a quick timeline, we definitely needed to storyboard. Having a roadmap will save you time in the end!

Storyboarding is like the map that turns chaotic ideas into a cohesive story. In motion design, it's a time-saver. With quick sketches and notes, creatives can spot pitfalls before they sink time. This playful pre-visualization allows quick revisions, sharper narrative focus, and a clear vision for every frame, making the animation process as smooth as butter.

Now that we know what we’re making, let’s get the style nailed down

Styleframes serve as visual snapshots of your animation’s aesthetic and atmosphere. These illustrations highlight the colors, lighting, and design approach you intend to utilize. In contrast to storyboards that center on action and movement, styleframes zero in on the mood and visual style. They enable the entire team to envision the completed piece before the animation process begins.

Time for the fun stuff! We know the content, we know the style, now we bring it to life

Did you know? 100% of Chip Nash’s love this part the most

Tight deadlines? No problem! This project was an exhilarating rollercoaster of creativity. I transformed the clock-ticking pressure into a fun and vibrant experience. Each brainstorming session was bursting with ideas, and I learned quite a few time saving tricks!

I had a lot of fun ensuring that the final result was not just delivered on time, but exploded with color and whimsy. Who knew managing a deadline could feel like a creative carnival?
